PUBLIC HEALTH MICROBIOLOGIST

APPROXIMATE MONTHLY SALARY: $3487 - $4241

This recruitment is being conducted to establish a six month eligibility list for this classification. Initially, the list will be used to fill one full-time vacancy in the Public Health Department. The list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time and extra help vacancies in the Placerville area.

THE POSITION: The essential functions and corresponding duties for the current vacancy include:

  • · Process human, animal and environmental specimens including: performing quantitative/qualitative exams of clinical specimens such as sputum, blood, urine, environmental samples, human and animal tissues, sewage and food, performing microscopic tests and analyzing specimens, and performing tests and analyzing for communicable diseases.
  • · Maintain lab equipment and supplies including: operating and maintaining a variety of lab equipment, troubleshooting operating problems and making adjustments, and measuring, evaluating and recording temperatures of equipment.
  • · Maintain detailed records and prepare written reports including: recording lab tests, preparing clear and concise reports, maintaining quality control records, and ordering and maintaining sufficient lab and testing supplies.
  • · Review the work of assigned support staff in director absence including: supervising support staff of specific projects, training non-licensed personnel and/or assistants in safe and proper procedures, and observing and promoting universal precautions and work safety rules.

THIS POSITION WILL USE YOUR:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Principles, practices and procedures of clinical laboratory operations including chemistry, microbiology, bacteriology, hematology, serology, coagulation, mycology and parasitology; principles and practices of laboratory quality control, statistical measurements and evaluation; operation and minor maintenance of a wide variety of laboratory equipment used in the work; computer applications related to laboratory support/recordkeeping; clinical procedures and recordkeeping requirements; safety precautions/safe work methods related to the work; basic supervisory principles and practices.

SKILL IN: Directing and training support staff on a project or day to day basis; performing a wide variety of laboratory tests and procedures; operating and maintaining complex laboratory equipment; developing and implementing test procedures to isolated and identify pathogens; maintaining quality control in performing laboratory work; preparing and maintaining accurate records of work performed; observing safety practices related to the work; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

CANDIDATES MUST POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with major coursework in biology, microbiology, bacteriology or a related field and one year of experience in the isolation and identification of bacteria and in conducting a wide variety of bacteriological and analytical tests.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess a valid driver' license. Must possess a valid Public Health Microbiologist Certificate issued by the State of California.
