Under general supervision, performs microbiological, molecular, biochemical, serological, chemical, hematological, blood type testing and other services for the detection, diagnosis, treatment and control of diseases and environmental health hazards in a public health laboratory.

The current vacancy is for a Microbiologist Grade I or II.

 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Under general supervision, performs microbiological, molecular, biochemical, serological, chemical, hematological, blood type testing and other services for the detection, diagnosis, treatment and control of diseases and environmental health hazards in a public health laboratory; performs complex technical procedures for the detection, isolation and identification of infectious disease agents, including emerging pathogens; performs supplemental tests on blood specimens for the detection of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, hepatitis viruses and other infectious diseases; examines food and water samples for the detection of microbiological pathogens; performs moderately complex clinical testing including clinical chemistry, toxicology, hematology and blood lead; implements and/or performs molecular diagnostic techniques to provide more sensitive and specific results; may perform chemical analysis of environmental samples when required; validates and interprets scientific laboratory test data, keeps records and prepares routine reports; enters patient information and test results in automated laboratory data systems and compiles statistics; utilizes independent action and judgment in resolving equivocal or indeterminate results; performs quality control and quality assurance procedures; complies with safety rules and regulations while working in the laboratory; assists in orientation of new staff members, other department staff and in lab presentations for outreach; undertakes special training for new procedures and assists in the development of procedures manuals; performs preventive maintenance procedures on equipment and instruments; troubleshoots equipment problems using manuals and/or telephone consultations with equipment representatives; may supervise lab staff and act as the Technical Supervisor; performs other related duties as required.

 REQUIREMENTS TO FILE:
-A current State of California Public Health Microbiologist Certificate (proof required*); OR a valid temporary State of California Public Health Microbiologist Certificate (proof required*).
-Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays and/or during health emergencies as needed.
-Ability to have normal color vision and normal digital dexterity.

Proof of a valid Class C motor vehicle operator's license and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of selection interview.

*Applications will not be processed until all required proofs are received. Any required proofs, such as diplomas, transcripts, or certificates, must be received in the Civil Service Department by January 16, 2008.

 SELECTION PROCEDURE:
This examination will be conducted using the non-competitive procedure of placing qualified individuals on an eligible list. Screening of candidates will be conducted on the basis of applications and documentation submitted. Resumes will be accepted, but may not be substituted in lieu of the required application forms. It is to the candidate’s advantage to clearly document all job-related education, training and experience. Qualified applicants will be placed on the eligible list with those receiving Veteran’s Credit first, and then in the order in which applications were filed.
