DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORYThe PositionSan Mateo County, located in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area, seeks a Director of Public Health Laboratory. This is a management level classification with commensurate benefits responsible for the operation and administration of the San Mateo County Public Health Laboratory. The Director organizes, plans and directs the activities of the lab as a diagnostic testing and referral center for San Mateo County. The Director oversees the work of the laboratory staff, prepares and administers the budget, works closely with the Disease Control and Prevention Unit to respond to and control infectious disease outbreaks and other environmental problems, provides epidemiological data on disease incidence and prevalence, and maintains the laboratory to meet local, State and Federal standards. For more details, please view our online brochure at www.co.sanmateo.ca.us Opportunities The Director will play a key role in implementing a wide variety of new and exciting laboratory enhancements, including: o Implementation of a state-of-the-art Laboratory Information System. o Development of applications for the brand new real-time PCR LightCycler and MagnaPure systems. o Opportunities for research and publication through collaboration with the HIV/AIDS Clinic and Disease Control and Prevention Unit. o Input into new screening technologies for emerging infectious diseases. QualificationsPossession of a valid certificate as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the State of California and experience equivalent to four years working in a public health laboratory and supervising its staff. Additionally, applicants will meet one of the following requirements: Possession of a Doctorate degree from an accredited university in a chemical, physical, biological science or clinical laboratory science and possession of certification by the American Board of Medical Microbiology, American Board of Clinical Chemistry, American Board of Immunology, American Board of Bioanalysis or other National accrediting board acceptable to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in one of the laboratory specialties and the equivalent of four years of full-time recent experience in public health laboratory work, including two years of lead or supervisory public health laboratory experience.
Salary & Benefits Annual salary to a maximum of $102,216 with a 4% increase due in November 2005. The Lab performs over 50,000 tests per year, and the supervisor plays a central role in ensuring rapid and accurate results. Qualifications Requires possession of a certificate as a Public Health Microbiologist issued by the California State Department of Health. The ideal candidate will also have at least three years of experience as a microbiologist. Salary & Benefits Salary: $5203 - 6505/month.
