Microbiology - Bacteriology

Reference Cultures:

•Identification and/or referral to MDL
•Serological agglutinations for Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli 0157:H7
•Cultures for Communicable Disease Department
•Bioterrorism rule-out or refer services

Microbiology – Mycobacteriology (TB)

•Acid Fast Bacilli Cultures
•Daily processing and smears Monday-Friday
•Gen-Probe Probe identifications for MTb Complex, MAC Complex, M. gordonae
•Referral for NAAT testing, susceptibility testing, and additional identifications

Microbiology – Mycology


•Identification of molds and yeast
•Referral to MDL for Coccidioides immitis identification

Microbiology – Parasitology

•Ova and parasite examinations

Microbiology – Virology

•R-Mix shell vial culture for 7 respiratory viruses

Serology

•Chlamydia and gonorrhea testing - NAAT
•Syphilis testing – screening, quantitation, confirmation
•HIV testing – serum and oral
•West Nile Virus
•Rabies
•Direct testing by IFA for 7 respiratory viruses
•Referral services to MDL and VRDL for miscellaneous serologies

Environmental Testing

•Water Testing
•Water Testing referrals
•Food Testing
•Chemical exposure referral specimen storage, shipping and handling

Regulatory Oversight

•Approval of Nondiagnostic General Health Assessment Applications
•Bioterrorism jurisdiction
•Notify other jurisdictions of reportable or significant organisms/incidents that cross jurisdictional boundaries

Referral Services

•Shipping and handling specimens for Bioterrorism
•Shipping and handling specimens to California Department of Health Services Laboratories
•Shipping and handling specimens to CDC
•Shipping and handling specimens to other County Public Health Laboratories
