Job Description and Duties
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by performing work in the field of viral vaccine preventable diseases, including rapid detection of measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella viruses using real-time PCR, genetic sequencing, and serologic testing, and molecular testing for rickettsia, vaccinia, Ebola, and other viruses of special concern. The Public Health Microbiologist II (PHM II) works with potentially infectious materials in a biosafety level 2 or 3 laboratory. Use of appropriate biosafety precautions, including personal protective equipment required as necessary, as well as standing or sitting for long periods of time in a laboratory environment.
The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Public Health Microbiologist Supervisor (PHM Sup) in the Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Herpesvirus Section.
This position requires possession of a valid Public Health Microbiologist’s certificate issued by the California State Department of Health Services.
