The Research Scientist (RS) II (Microbiological Sciences) plans, organizes, and carries out moderately complex and innovative analyses on botulism. The RS II retains proficiency and competency in botulism testing to perform testing on a specific phase of a more complex scientific research study; prepares technical reports and papers for publication; assists in developing new or revised existing methods and procedures; ensures compliance with quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) and safety procedures; and may be delegated technical or general Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act (CLIA) supervisory responsibilities over diagnostic testing, if qualified. As part of the High Risk Pathogens Section (HRPS), the RS II also uses sophisticated laboratory instrumentation and/or advanced techniques; tests diagnostic samples referred to a reference laboratory; develops innovative methods; originates and evaluates experimental methods; analyzes data and draws conclusions; serves as a botulism technical consultant; and provides technical consultations to internal and external partners and stakeholders.
