CAPHLD HIGHLIGHTS

APHL Annual Conference 2025


CAPHLD members had the valuable opportunity to participate in the APHL 2025 Annual Conference, held in Portland, OR, from May 5–8, 2025. This year’s conference was successfully led by the excellent leadership of APHL president Dr. Megan Crumpler (serving her last year as the APHL president, soon followed by President Elect – Dr. Scott Shone).


Several esteemed CAPHLD representatives delivered presentations on a wide range of topics, from strategies in responding to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) to captivating discussions on unusual scientific phenomena.


At the conference, APHL recognized several California representatives for their contributions in advancing Public Health Science. Some of the award categories included:


  1. Silver Award – This award honors a laboratorian with 10 to 15 years of service in a governmental public health laboratory. The honoree will be recognized as a leader both within their home laboratory as well as external to their laboratory.

  2. Healthiest Laboratory Award – This award is given to an APHL member laboratory that is committed to safety, environmental process, environmental policy and employee health and wellness.


Some of the Key topics of discussion included:

  • Microplastics: Yes, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” Applies (Participating speakers: Dr. Anthony Tran and Dr. Scott Coffin)

  • Enhancing Surveillance for Cronobacter infections following important regulatory changes (Participating speakers: Dr. Nicole M. Green)

  • Navigating the Narrative: Public Health communication challenges during the HPAI H5N1 response (Participating speakers: Dr Anthony Tran and Dr. Denise Lopez)

  • Projects that are transforming the Public Health Data infrastructure (Participating speakers: Dr. Rajesh Sharma)

  • A brave new world: How Public Health laboratories are using High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (Participating speakers: Dr Jianwen She)
