The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for a Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) Specialist within our Center for Laboratory Sciences (CLS). In this role, you will serve as a LabAspire PHM Training Program Coordinator, functioning as a subject matter expert (SME) to staff that provide didactic and laboratory training in bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, and virology to PHM trainees throughout California.

CLS is based on the Richmond Campus which employs more than 1,200 people. The Richmond Campus is a flat, 29-acre property located in Richmond's Marina Bay. The CLS serves to protect and promote the health of all Californians through innovative and collaborative infectious disease and environmental testing, including provision of investigation and surveillance activities which form the basis of disease response and prevention. The CLS works to bring together emerging scientific capabilities in testing, analytics, and communications reflecting a new level of coordination, support, and leadership for the public health laboratory system at the state, local and national level. In addition, the Center relies on a continuous improvement infrastructure as a core value in developing solutions that emphasize a culture of quality and performance through performance management success.

Responsibilities:


  • Deliver lectures as requested by the PHM Training managers and arrange for alternate lecturers in the event of scheduling conflicts; schedule guest lectures for units in which the incumbent serves as the Point of Contact (POC); and assist PHM Training program managers and trainers with scheduling speakers for assigned units

  • Answer questions related to lecture and lab material; participate in PHM Training Office Hours; provide input for training unit development and updates; and update questions for the board exam, study questions, and exam questions

  • Assist Program Manager (PM) with preparing, summarizing, and presenting program information for the LabAspire update at the California Association of Public Health Laboratory Directors (CAPHLD) Spring and Fall meetings; serve as the PM’s backup for presenting; and assist PM with conducting and facilitating board meetings with the CAPHLD, Executive Committee (EC) and other affiliated partners

  • Correspond, share information and resources through email, phone conversation, or virtual meetings with local public health laboratories (PHLs) and interested candidates, and sustain their interest in joining and participating in the LabAspire Program

  • Communicate regularly with LabAspire fellows regarding training requirements and steps to take the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) exam and other board certification exams as applicable and monitor progress towards fulfilling program requirements

  • Maintain and keep track of attained Technical Supervisor/General Surgery (TS/GS) board certification exams, and PHM/MPH/DrPH/PhD credentials by the fellows during their training; communicate with the ABB and other board certification exam leadership for clarification on completion of supervisory experience, transcript evaluation, and other requirements for Fellows to sit for the board exam(s); send email notifications and reminders to LabAspire Fellows for submission of quarterly progress reports; and collect and organize reports and prepares summaries as needed

  • Recruit speakers for bi-monthly presentation meeting; send meeting agendas/minutes and email updates to the LabAspire group attendees; and act as the liaison between the LabAspire Fellows and various agencies and organizations (e.g., CDPH, LFS, ABB, etc.) for training completion and updates

  • Assist PM with maintaining the LabAspire Google drive, periodically uploading important forms (including application packets), presentation videos, Fellows’ information etc., as well as checking and responding to emails as needed

  • Assign training modules and assignments to Fellows; arrange virtual and/or in-field educational opportunities as per availability of resources and need of the Fellows; and assist PM with collecting laboratory workforce data for stakeholders and workgroups

  • Prepare certificates of completion for graduating Fellows, get the certificates signed by the CAPHLD president and State Laboratory Director, and email the signed certificates to the graduates
