Job Description and Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health by providing public health laboratory testing to identify high-risk pathogens and support outbreak investigations. Under general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSSI) (Microbiologist) of the High Risk Pathogens Section (HRPS) and the HRPS Select Agents & Laboratory Response Unit, the Public Health Microbiologist II (PHM II) performs diagnostic and reference testing for microorganisms using classical and molecular methods and reports results to submitters in an accurate and timely manner. Primary areas of focus are identification and characterization of microorganisms, toxins, and agents in the Laboratory Response Network -Biological (LRN-B) and federal Tier 1 Select Agents list, including cross training to support work on botulinum toxin-producing clostridia. The candidate is expected to have advanced laboratory knowledge and skills in order to perform the duties of this position. The candidate must demonstrate good laboratory technique in order to avoid contamination or other test errors, knowledge of molecular methods and troubleshooting, and ability to work with various computer software applications in order to analyze results.

The incumbent works under the Research Scientist Supervisor I of the MDL High Risk Pathogens Section.
