This is an Extra Help position in the Emergency Preparedness Infectious Disease Control (EPIC) Division assigned to the Public Health Laboratory in Chico. The position will be designated as the Public Health Microbiologist Trainee to attend the Lab Aspire Training Program.


Minimum Qualifications


Knowledge of:

  • County and department policies and procedures.

  • Occupational safety and health rules and regulations, and their specific applications to a microbiology laboratory.

  • Equipment maintenance techniques and practices.

  • Sterile techniques and environmental monitoring.

  • Scientific and standard computer applications and programs.

  • Principles and practices of file and records management.

  • Principles and practices of inventory control.

Ability To:

  • Pack and organize numerous laboratory items in an orderly fashion for their efficient storage, distribution and retrieval.

  • Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands.

  • Work within deadlines to complete projects and assignments.

  • Assess analyze, identify and recommend solutions to problems.

  • Follow and effectively communicate verbal and written instructions.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers.

  • Operate a personal computer utilizing a variety of standard and scientific software.

  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to an Associate's degree in Laboratory Technology or related field and;

One (1) year of experience in public health or clinical laboratory work.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess a valid US driver’s license upon date of application. Must obtain California driver’s license following hire date per California DMV regulations.
