The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for a Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) Supervisor within our Center for Laboratory Sciences, Division of Infectious Diseases Laboratories, Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL). In this role, you will serve as the Supervisor of the Foodborne & Waterborne Diseases Detection Unit.
MDL provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and reference laboratory services, applied research, training, and subject matter expertise for a wide range of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic infectious diseases.

Responsibilities:
Organize and direct the activities and day-to-day operations of the Foodborne & Waterborne Diseases Detection Unit, such as testing procedures, test result notification, and Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) practices
Ensure QC/QA plans meet regulatory and departmental standards, and that they are implemented and being followed
Supervise staff regarding timesheets, work schedules, overtime, training records, immunization and performance; identify and correct staff performance problems
Ensure staff are trained and that written documentation is kept for technical, safety, and quality procedures in the Section and for the MDL Branch
Coordinate the submission and acceptance of samples from client groups
Review protocols and daily reports and evaluate and validate new diagnostic test procedures as necessary
Review purchase orders, arrange for proficiency test samples, track work orders, and maintain computer databases
Review raw data for completeness, accuracy, and precision; report and resolve discrepancies in data; and extract data for response to Department Drills
Identify new technologies that might improve lab performance or reduce analytical time; develop validation plans for new media, methods, or equipment; and prepare articles for publishing in peer reviewed journals
Coordinate communications with the local health labs, CDPH partners, or other stakeholders in support of outbreak investigations, epidemiologic surveillance, regulatory functions or emergency response
