This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Supervising Public Health Microbiologist positions within the Health Care Agency. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.


THE OPPORTUNITY

The Supervising Public Health Microbiologist (SPHM) will be responsible for the following duties, but not limited to:

  • Oversee the Tuberculosis/Parasitology/Mycology which performs testing for diseases such as Tuberculosis, Malaria, intestinal parasites (e.g. Cryptosporidium/Giardia), and fungal and yeast pathogens of importance

  • Perform difficult analysis and testing within departments/sections

  • Supervise, train, review, and oversee work of staff including Public Health Microbiologists, Public Health Microbiologist Trainees, and Lab Assistants

  • Schedule staff to ensure adequate coverage, assign work, and coordinate rotations within the section

  • Ensure competency and proficiency of staff on all test methods in their departments, the adherence to standardized operating procedures, and following safety and quality assurance practices

  • Provide professional consultation on laboratory procedures testing and reporting to departments within HCA, other County programs, hospital or clinical microbiology labs, and Environmental Health Specialists
